Turkish Ambassador to Bangla Withdrawn after Nizami’s Execution

Dhaka: Following the execution of Jamaat-e-Islami leader Motiur Rahman Nizami, the Turkish people saw protests and violence in both in front of their embassy at Bangladesh and at Istanbul. Turkish president Tayyip Erdogan, therefore, have issued an official statement to its Bangladeshi ambassador Debrim Ozturk and asked him to report home as soon as it is possible.

In Istanbul, members of Anatolia Youth Association (AGD) ‘gathered their voice’ and protested. Nizami was fourth from his party who has been executed since December 2013 for 1971 war crimes ‘despite global criticism of their trials.’
In a statement made by President Tayyip Erdogan on May 11, the ministry has ‘condemned’ the death penalty of the 72-year-old Islami leader. The statement also condemned the execution, said reports. The Turkish ambassador, debrim ozturk was ordered to leave Bangladesh. He will reach at his homeland at late at Thursday. Dhaka has confirmed Ozturk’s departure in a Turkish airlines flight for Ankara.

When a country is extremely displeased at a certain policy or action of another country, the former withdraws its ambassador from the latter to express its displeasure, said a former diplomat pointing towards the complex procedure untaken by the Turkish ministry to call its ambassador back at home. Some also stated that with modern ways of communication available, ‘it has few practical consequences or utility, but it is still indicative of a serious strain on bilateral relations,’ sources said.
