Kolkata Mountaineer Dies at Mt. Dhaulagiri, Lower Oxygen Levels Caused Snow Blindness and Heart Attack

Kolkata: A 43-year-old Bengali mountaineer, Rajib Bhattacharya, was reported dead while he was touring down to the plains from Mount Dhaulagiri in Nepal. Bhattacharya’s expedition team has confirmed the news on late at Friday.

Bhattacharya, who was a resident of Baranagar, the northern fringe of the city, is an experienced climber and also had scaled Mount Everest in May 2011with teammate Dipankar Ghosh. Reports from the Nepal’s Seven Summit Treks depicted that Rajib had developed snow blindness and a heart attack due to lack of oxygen at an altitude of 7600 meters on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the West Bengal government said that a three-member team will reach the area and bring back the body that is still lying attached to a rock under a terrain. The three member team will include fellow mountaineer Dipankar Ghosh, Devdas Nandi from West Bengal Mountaineering Federation and a relative of Rajib, Prabir Bhattacharya. “The temperature is frigid and the terrain is difficult. It will be a tough task,” said Manab Lahiri, vice-president of Serampore’s Angan Chariye.
