The Weeknd Dominates 2016 Billboard Music Awards

Los Angeles: Canadian singer Abęl Makkonen Tesfaye, better known as The Weeknd, took home eight trophies including the prize for top RnB album for Beauty Behind The Madness.
One Direction, Rihanna and Justin Bieber were also named winners. Adele was another winner on the night including taking the top prize when she was named Artist Of The Year. “Oh my god, I can’t believe I’ve won,” she said in a video message. The singer was unable to attend the event in Las Vegas as she’s currently on tour in Spain. “I never ever thought that this album would be received like this. Have a great night, have a drink on me and a party.”
Britney Spears kicked of the awards ceremony with a medley of hits including Womanizer and I Love Rock and Roll. There were also performances from Meghan Trainor, Ariana Grande and Fifth Harmony.
Madonna and Stevie Wonder teamed up for a powerful duet in honor of Prince.
The night also saw a rare performance from Kesha. Although she had originally been told by her label that she wouldn't be able to take the stage, but later she was invited back. Kesha’s been in a long running legal battle with Dr Luke her former producer, after she accused him of sexually and emotionally abusing her, something he’s always denied. Her label agreed to let her perform just days before the ceremony. She performed It Ain’t Me, Babe.
Wiz Khalifa's song See You Again featuring Charlie Puth was named best rap song.
Several musicians used their performances and acceptance speeches to honor Prince. Prince died at his home in April 2016 aged 57.
The Weeknd was visibly emotional as he dedicated one of his wins to the late singer. He said: “I didn't know him but he was very close to me. He helped me push the envelope as well as doing the same to every artist forever. Rest in peace Prince.”
Madonna meanwhile wore an outfit similar to many made famous by Prince. She brought out Stevie Wonder as a surprise guest for a duet of Purple Rain.
Before the ceremony, organizers had defended their decision to choose Madonna to pay tribute to Prince after an online petition called for more musicians to be included.
Priyanka Chopra was one of the presenters for the awards night.
