Madurai: Voting in Tamil Nadu’s Aravakurichi Assembly constituency has been
postponed with serious charges of cash distribution by the All India Dravida
Munnetra Kazhagam (AIDMK) and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. Reports are that the
poll will now be held on May 23 instead of May 16, Monday. The election
commission also had agreed with the alleged allegation against AIDMK and has
said that ‘candidates and political parties had bribed voters.’
The EC also asserted that the voting process has
been ‘seriously vitiated’ allowing the unlawful activities of contesting
parties and candidates. Reports are that
the vote adjournment notice was attached with FIRs and police complaints that
have been lodged by the Income Tax department.
Income Tax raids have conducted in houses and
residences of political leaders to take account of the illegal money and other
gift items that have been distributed among the voters to bribe them. EC said:
“The irresistible conclusion is that all the above seized monies and gift items
were meant for distribution to electors as illegal inducement to them.”
A video was also found that shown political workers
in Tamil Nadu's Panruti Assembly constituency is bribing voters for as
many as 1000 votes. Apart
from the Aravakurichi Assembly
constituency, rest of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry will go on polls on May
16.
Results for will be declared on May 19. Chief
Minister Jayalalithaa leading the ruling AIDMK party ‘will seek to retain
power’ in the state. On the other hand, competitor DMK, led by 93-year-old M.
Karunanidhi, with an alliance with Congress is combating to make a comeback.
