Heavy Downpour in Chennai May Bring Flood Emergency Call

Chennai: Continuous rain over Chennai and in neighboring Puducherry, Cuddalore and Nagapattinam may lead to flood. The rains will continue for more 24-hours as a depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal will lead more downpour.


Reports are that there will be at a flood emergency following the high velocity winds and torrential rains in Chennai. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has also informed that the winds combined with heavy rains are damaging to the southern city of India and its neighboring areas that went through a severe flood on last December.
The Chennai Met Office said that till Monday Chennai has received a rainfall of 71 mm while another update on the same had showed that Wednesday morning received the heaviest rain, a total of 82 mm. Weather office cautioned not to venture into the sea. “We have warned fishermen not to venture into sea as it would be rough, and squally weather will prevail with wind blowing up to 70 km per hour,” S. Balachandran, Director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre has asserted.


Alerts for flood-like condition is already under action at Chennai as the city is braced with ‘some extremely heavy’ downpour. The Greater Chennai Corporation even has called the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams to deal with any untimely incidents. The Greater Chennai Corporation is also busy with draining the rainwater and removing fallen trees as those are bringing to a standstill to the traffic. Workers of the team also had issued a warning to all the hospitals to help in the flood.



Chennai also had its Assembly Elections on Monday, 16 May. Reports are that the EVMs and other polling measures were stationed covered with tarpaulin at the strong rooms of Queen Mary’s College. However, Chennai had a heat wave alert up to Monday that turned into a comfortable 27.8 degree Celsius with breezy rains early on Monday.
