Kolkata:
The
swearing-in-ceremony of Mamata Banerjee and her ministers that took place on
Friday in the open-air might have been spared by rain. But the Met office
expects thundershowers in the next 48 hours in Kolkata and southern parts of
Bengal. A trough line combined with a cyclonic circulation could triggers few
spells of rain in the next few days.
GC Debnath, deputy director general of meteorology, Regional
Meteorological Centre Kolkata,
said, “Frequency of thundershower in Kolkata,
neighboring areas and south Bengal will increase in the next 48 hours.” “The
discomfort index shot up to 62. When this index crosses 55, the heat becomes
difficult to tolerate,” explained Debnath.
With no rain activity during the day on Friday the humidity
rose. Even as the maximum temperature at 35.7 degree Celsius was only one notch
above the normal mark, high humidity made the heat intolerant for those
thousands who had come to attend the swearing-in ceremony programme on Red
Road. Few even fainted under the sun. A trough line extending from Punjab to
Assam across Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and northern parts of West Bengal
and a cyclonic circulation over adjoining Bihar and sub Himalayan West Bengal
has raised the hope for thundershowers.
Pre-monsoon rains have been active in different parts of
India since last few weeks. While several weather systems have contributed in
giving these rains, Cyclone Roanu has also been instrumental in bringing
adequate rain over parched areas of Chennai, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and
dropping temperatures significantly over hot pockets of Delhi-NCR, Madhya
Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Skymet Weather has predicted Monsoon 2016 to be
above normal and as most of Indian residents await the onset of Southwest
Monsoon, adequate pre-monsoon rain is keeping them happy.
