Dispur: The exit polls for Assam have been proven
right and now, the BJP is comfortably on its way to end the 15-year rule of the
Tarun Gogoi-led Congress government in state.
Ending a 15-year rule in a state is
no small achievement for the party, especially when in the last elections it
had won an abysmally low number of five seats.
Following BJP’s lead in more than 80
constituencies, party’s chief ministerial candidate Sarbananda Sonowalsaid the
priority of the new government will be to protect the interests of “greater
Assamese society.” Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulates Mr.
Sonowal, says “BJP will do everything possible to fulfil dreams of people of
Assam.”
BJP’s chief ministerial candidate
Sarbananda Sonowal is leading in Majuli and former Congress strongman Himanta
Biswa Sarma, who is contesting on BJP ticket from Jalukbari, is also in the
lead.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is also
leading in Titabar but his party could concede power to the BJP if the initial
trends convert into seats.
Previously, Gogoi ruled out any
possibility of forming a secular Third Front to keep the BJP away from power as
he is “confident” of returning to power in the state for a consecutive fourth
term. “We are definitely going to get the majority. We’ll reach the magic
figure of 64, nothing less than that,” said Gogoi.
BJP’s chief ministerial candidate
Sarbananda Sonowal has said the exit polls only reflected the wishes of the
people and that BJP and its allies were going to form the next government in
the state. Sonowal also predicted that the BJP is going to win over 84 seats in
Assam in the 126-seat assembly.
