New Delhi: Apple’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Tim
Cook will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi this week during his trip to India,
which is also a key market of Apple. An official from the PM’s office has
confirmed that a meeting between Cook and Modi has been scheduled on Saturday,
May 21.
Cook is also expected to visit Bengaluru and
Hyderabad, the leading technology centers of the country. However, Apple has
already announced that it will set up a development centre in Hyderabad,
starting with about 150 people who would help with the development of maps.
Cook is to visit India for the first time after he took over Apple from Steve
Jobs in 2011.
Reports are that Cook is coming to India from China,
in the second leg of his Asia trip. Apple India spokesperson Anand Bhaskaran have
confirmed the trip but asserted that the CEO has refused to disclose further
‘itinerary’. With India being one of the key markets of Apple for iPhone, Cook
looks at it ‘to stem a slump in sales.’ “But I view India as where China
was maybe seven to ten years ago. From that point of view and I think there’s a
really great opportunity there,” Cook noted pointing Indian markets’ potential.
Sources said, in a recent interview earlier this
month Cook has asserted that Apple have huge potential in India. He further
added that that are ‘really putting energy’ in the country. The tech-giant has
also sent in an official proposal to the Indian government for selling
refurbished phones in India.
