Kolkata: Accused of nabbing of a buffalo that had
charged the life of Kaushik Purakait, the victim’s family on Thursday demanded
a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe against the main suspect, the
local Trinamool Congress leader.
The 24-year-old ITI student, a resident of
Mandirbazar, went to his aunt’s place at Diamond Harbour and was beaten to
death by the mob on Monday, accusing him of being a member of a cattle
smuggling team.
Kaushik’s father, Kartik Purakait said: “Three days
have passed but the police are yet to arrest Mallik who had led the attack on
my son. Just because he is a Trinamool leader, they are trying to shield him.
We don't have any faith in the police. We demand a CBI probe.”
As claimed by association for protection of
democratic rights (APDR), the police too are ‘unwilling to treat Mallick as the
prime suspect’. APDR’s secretary Ranjit Sur said: “It’s not just the family
alone, many of the villagers who have witnessed the incident have all claimed
Mallik was leading the assault but the police are not willing to accept him as
the prime suspect.” Reports are that actor turned politician Roopa Ganguly has
visited the deceased family and the investigating police officers.
