In the fifth and penultimate phase of Assembly polls in West Bengal on April
30, 78.25 percent voters voted in 53 Constituencies. Kolkata witnessed a
total of 63.1 percent turnout.
By
the end of polling on Saturday, 186 people were arrested in incidents of
electoral malpractice and sporadic violence that left at least 15 injured.
The
highest turnout was recorded in South-24 Parganas (79.69 percent), followed by
Hooghly (78.98 percent). Kolkata South recorded a 63.10 percent turnout.
During
the day, the EC had received 2,970 complaints, of which, 2,846 were disposed of
till 6 PM, sources said. Out of the 186 arrests, nine were made in specific
cases. The rest were preventive arrests, ADGP (Law and Order) Anuj Sharma said.
As many as 192 EVMs and 19 VVPATs were replaced due to malfunctioning.
FIRs
have been lodged against two presiding officers at Arambagh and Tarkeshwar
after they were found aiding voters in casting ballots and even allowing
unauthorized entry into their booths, state Chief Electoral Officer Sunil Gupta
said.
So
far, elections have already been held in 269 of the 294 Constituencies in the
state. The remaining 25 will vote on May 5 in ultimate phase six. The 25
Constituencies going under poll on May 5 are Mekliganj, Mathabhanga, Cooch
behar Uttar, Cooch behar Dakshin, Sitalkuchi, Sitai, Dinhata, Natabari,
Tufanganj, Tamluk, Panskura Purba, Panskura Paschim, Moyna, Nandakumar,
Mahisadal, Haldia, Nandigram, Chandipur, Patashpur, Kanthi Uttar, Bhagabanpur,
Khejuri, Kanthi Dakshin, Ramnagar and Egra.
