Kolkata: Former Union
minister and Congress leader Deepa Dasmunsi will contest the West Bengal
assembly elections against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee from the Bhabanipur
seat.
Dasmunsi's name figures in the second list of 42 party
candidates announced by the All India Congress Committee (AICC), taking the
total candidates declared by the party to 95. Deepa, wife of former Union
minister and Congress stalwart Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi hails from south Kolkata.
Her now ailing husband won the general election from the South Kolkata Lok
Sabha segment in 1971. Adhir Chowdhury had earlier announced that party general
secretary Om Prakash Mishra would contest from the Bhawanipore segment in the
coming polls. Accordingly, Mishra had also begun his campaign as the nominee
for the Congress-Left Front combine.
Among the prominent candidates are senior leader Shankar
Singh who is the party nominee from Ranaghat Uttar Paschim and Arunava Ghosh
from Bidhannagar. The Congress has re-nominated almost all its sitting MLAs.
In the last Assembly elections, Congress had contested 61
seats in alliance with Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress which led to ouster
of the CPI(M)-led Left Front after over 34 years in power.
The Bhawanipore Assembly constituency is set to witness a
Battle Royale with Mamata Banerjee, Netaji’s kin Chandra Kumar Bose and Deepa
Dasmunsi contesting each other. Cashing in on the Netaji sentiment, especially
in the wake of the de-classification move by the Centre, Bharatiya Janata Party
(BJP) had pitted the legendary freedom fighter's grandnephew Chandra Kumar Bose
against Banerjee in her Bhawanipore Assembly constituency. Bose's ancestral
house on Elgin Road comes under Bhawanipore Assembly constituency.
