Rostov-on-Don: Flydubai flight
FZ981 crashed in the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don killing all 61 on
board on Saturday.
The flight was en route from
Dubai and crashed during its second landing approach amid poor weather
conditions. The 61 dead include 55 passengers and six crew members. The Boeing
737 plane on the Dubai to Rostov-on-Don route caught fire after crashing.
It was in the air for about two hours in between making an initial
attempt to land, and the second attempt, when the plane crashed. The plane's
flight path, as tracked by Flight Radar 24, shows the plane made a number of
turns near the Rostov-on-Don airport prior to the final attempted landing.
Following the incident, the
airline company wrote on its official Facebook page "We are aware of an
incident involving our flight FZ981 from Dubai to Rostov-on-Don. We are
investigating further details and will publish an update once more information
is available."
Russia’s top investigative agency, the Investigative
Committee, said that preliminary information indicates the plane was landing
when it hit the ground and broke into pieces at the airport about 950 kilometers
(600 miles) south of Moscow. Most of the passengers on board were Russian. An
emergency ministry official said: "Three foreigners were on the passenger
list of the plane, but that information needs checking".
The Emergencies Ministry has opened up a hotline while a team
of psychologists has been sent to help the grieving relatives.
Saturday’s incident is believed
to be the first time a FlyDubai plane has crashed.
