Bangalore: In the most
nail-biting match of the 2016 ICC World T20 yet, India defeated Bangladesh by
one run on Wednesday at the M.Chinnaswamy stadium in Bangalore, thereby
eliminating Bangladesh from entering the ‘Knock-Out’ stage.
Winning the toss,
Bangladesh elected to field first. India scored 146 runs off seven wickets.
Suresh Raina merged as the highest scorer for India with 30 runs, while Virat
Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan were the next highest scorers with 24 and 23 runs
respectively. Bangladeshi players Al-Amin Hossain and Mustafizur Rahman took
two wickets each for their team.
Bangladeshi player Tamim
Iqbal Khan was the country’s highest scorer with 35 runs. Ravichandran Ashwin,
Ravindrasinh Jadeja and Hardik Pandya took two wickets each for India. In the
last 12 balls Bangladesh needed 17 runs. Mushfiqur Rahim of Bangladesh cracked
Pandya through the covers for a boundary and scooped the next ball for another
boundary but fell to the fourth ball hitting to Dhawan at deep mid-wicket. Bangladesh’s
Mohammad Mahmudullah was declared out when he was bowled by Pandya while Jadeja
pulled off a brilliant catch at deep mid-wicket for 18. When two runs were needed
off the last ball, MS Dhoni raced with the ball to run out Mustafizur Rahman to
win the match.
Wednesday also saw
Dhoni become the fifth Indian player to pass 1,000 runs in T20s. The match was
also the fourth one-run win match in World T20 history. Ashwin was adjudged
‘Player Of The Match’.
Bangladesh now exits
this edition of ICC World T20 with zero points, although they have one last
match with ‘Group B’ leader New Zealand, who have six points, on March 26.
India is now at the second spot with four points, and is followed by Pakistan and
Australia, both with two points each. India’s next match is with Australia on
March 27.
