Kolkata: In their first
‘Super Ten’ match of the 2016 ICC World Twenty20 on Wednesday, Pakistan
defeated Bangladesh by 55 runs at the Eden Gardens stadium in Kolkata.
Pakistan opted to bat
first after winning the toss and scored 201 runs off five wickets with Ahmed
Shehzad, Mohammad Hafeez and team captain Shahid Afridi playing brilliant
individual innings. In their innings, Bangladesh could only manage 146 runs in
its stipulated 20 overs, with Shakib Al Hasan remaining not out in 50 off 40
balls. Despite winning the last two matches the two teams played against each
other, Bangladesh fell short during their run chase this time.
Mohammad Amir and
Afridi took two wickets each to put Bangladesh’s game in jeopardy. Afridi was
adjudged ‘Player Of The Match’ for his superlative performance with both bat
and ball. Afridi, who scored 49 off 19 balls, also excelled in his battling
skills. He hit four sixes apart from equal number of boundaries and his innings
was the difference between 150 and 200.
Mashrafe Mortaza, the
captain of Bangladesh team, said: “Two hundred is always difficult with
Pakistan’s bowling attack. And after six overs, it was almost impossible.
Shakib batted very well and we got 150, so it is not that bad.”
Bangladeshi players
Taskin Ahmed and Arafat Sunny picked up two wickets each for their team.
Bangladesh was one of the
two teams that qualified to enter ‘Super Ten’, the other one being Afghanistan.
Bangladesh even topped the group that it was placed in, ranking above The
Netherlands, Oman and Ireland.
Pakistan is going to
face India next on March 19, while Bangladesh’s next match is with Australia on
March 21.
