Mumbai: Pakistani-American
terrorist David Headley, convicted in the US for his role in the 26/11 Mumbai
attacks, on Thursday told that an attempt was made on late Shiv Sena Chief
Bal Thackeray's life by terrorist organization Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).
Headley disclosed this fact during a
cross-examination on the second day by Abdul Wahab Khan, the lawyer of Abu
Jundal, an alleged key plotter of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, via a video
link from the US. Earlier during his testimony, when questioned by public
prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam, Headley had said that the "Shiv Sena Chief"
was the target. He however had not specified nor was he asked further regarding
the operation.
"I have never received any money from the LeT. I gave (them) funds from
myself," Headley revealed. He also disclosed that Tahawwur Rana, his
associate and a Pakistani native, had once come to Mumbai just prior to the
26/11 strikes, and that he continued his association with him till Headley’s
arrest. Headley had admitted earlier in the week that he financed the
Pakistan-based terror outfit to the tune of around 6-7 million Pakistani Rupees
and his last donation was in 2010.
Headley, in his earlier
deposition, said how Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI provides “financial,
military and moral support” to terror outfits LeT — Jaish-e-Mohammad and Hizbul
Mujahideen, and how LeT planned and executed the 26/11 Mumbai attack.
The US Federal Court
sentenced Headley to 35 years in prison for his role in the Mumbai attacks on
January 24, 2013.
