German Cops Probe Data-Breach Case In Kolkata

Kolkata: German cops along with officers of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) raided a Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) office in Salt Lake Sector V on Wednesday and Thursday in connection with a cheating complaint lodged by a Germany-based company.
The accused had allegedly set up an IT firm in Sector V and was providing technical support to the German company. The Bidhannagar police's cyber cell is also helping the CID officers in the probe. The case was referred to CID by the Delhi Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), who claimed that the German police had contacted them initially through the Interpol.
A CID officer said: “The complaint mentions that the German company's client data had been stolen and the company suspects the BPO. The German police told us that their investigation had revealed that some clients of the German company had been directly approached by the BPO in violation of the agreement.” “The volume of information stolen is yet to be ascertained. The German police have told us that the company has suffered losses to the tune of crores of rupees because of the data theft,” he further added.
The local police are yet to find out whether the BPO or some of its employees were involved in the crime.

With data breach emerging as a major risk area for companies, the IT firms in Kolkata are now themselves rushing to the cops. The Bidhannagar and Kolkata cyber cells have recorded six different FIRs in this regard in the past six months.
