The
Delhi High Court on Wednesday granted six months of conditional interim bail to
JNU student Kanhaiya Kumar who was arrested on sedition charges nearly three
weeks back.
Justice
Pratibha Rani who heard the case said: "Sometimes
students who misinterpret freedom of speech need to be cured. Whenever some
infection is spread in a limb, effort is made to cure it by giving antibiotics
orally... if the infection results in infecting the limb to the extent that it
becomes gangrene, amputation is the only treatment... To enable him to remain
in the mainstream, at present I am inclined to opt for the conservative method
of treatment."
The court asked Kumar to guarantee
that he will not take part in any “anti-national activity” and will appear in
front of the court whenever necessary for investigations. Kumar who was
arrested on February 12 is presently in Tihar jail for his role in the alleged
JNU incident. Two more students — Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya — who
had also been arrested on the same charges are still in custody.
Justice Pratibha Rani has started
her order with a patriotic song and said: “"Such persons enjoy freedom to
raise slogans in comfort of university campus... without realizing that they
are in safe environment because our forces are there on the battlefield." Hundreds
of JNU students who had protested against Kumar’s order erupted in joy when the
bail was granted. The bail bond of Rs 10,000 will be paid by the JNU faculty.
Forensic reports of the videos submitted show that two of the seven videos are
doctored.
