Bangalore: In the fifth
‘Group One’ match of 2016 ICC World T20, West Indies defeated Sri Lanka by
seven wickets on Sunday at the M. Chinnaswamy stadium in Bangalore.
Winning the toss, West Indies chose to field first. Sri Lanka scored
122 runs off nine wickets. Thisara Perara was Sri Lanka’s highest scorer with
40 runs while Dinesh Chandimal (16), Angelo Matthews (20) and Dilshan (12) were
the only other ones who managed to get into double figures. The Caribbean
players showed an outstanding display of skills in the match’s first innings
with Samuel Badree taking three wickets and Dyane Brave taking another two
wickets.
West Indies hit 127 runs for the loss of three wickets in 18.2
overs. Except for a little while in the middle overs, the West Indies never
found the going tough. Though Johnson Charles (ten runs), Marlon Samuels (three
runs), and Dinesh Ramdin (five runs) were lost cheaply, Andre Russell saw his
team home to end with style, hitting 20 runs off eight balls. Sri Lankan player
Milinda Siriwardana took two wickets for his team.
West Indian cricketer Andre Fletcher was adjudged ‘Player Of The
Match’.
West Indies is now
going to face South Africa on March 25, whereas Sri Lanka will take on England
on March 26. West Indies is currently leading ‘Group One’ with four points,
while Sri Lanka, South Africa and England are tied for the second spot with two
points each. Afghanistan is at the bottom of the group and is yet to score a point.
