Bangalore: In the fifth ‘Group Two’ match of the Super Ten stage of the 2016 ICC World T20, Australia defeated Bangladesh by three wickets at the M.Chinnaswamy stadium in Bangalore.
Winning the toss, Australia elected to field first. Bangladeshi player Mohammad Mahmudullah was the country’s highest scorer for the day with 49 runs and remained not out. Mahmudullah fell one run short for a half-century. Shakib Al Hasan was the second highest scorer with 33 runs, adding to the team’s total score of 156 runs off five wickets. Australian cricketers Adam Zampa and Shane Watson took three and two wickets respectively in the first innings of the match.
Australian player Usman Khwaja played a phenomenal innings of 58 runs off 45 balls with seven fours and a six. Hasan took three wickets to emerge as the biggest all-rounder of the match. He was followed by Mustafizur Rahman who took two wickets.
Australia, who needed to win today to remain in contention after losing to New Zealand in their lung opener, were cruising along nicely before  suffering a batting collapse and they had to scamper at the end to chase down the target of 157 with nine balls to spare at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. After 20 overs, Australia scored 157 runs off seven wickets.
Zampa was adjudged ‘Player Of The Match’.
Monday’s win gave Australia two points and they are now tied for the second spot along with India and Pakistan in ‘Group Two’, which is being led by New Zealand with four points. Bangladesh is at the bottom of the list and is yet to score a point.
Bangladesh is now going to face India on March 23 while Australia will take on Pakistan on March 25.
