Brussels: Raghvendran
Ganesan, the Infosys employee, who had been missing since the terrorist attack
that shook Brussels on March 22, was confirmed dead on Monday.
The Belgian authorities
identified him as the sole Indian victim of the terror attack after conducting
a DNA test on the found body.
The 31-year-old Infosys
techie’s last call had been traced to the Metro in the Belgian capital. He
took the Metro route for work every day and had last spoken to his Mumbai-based
parents over Skype just an hour before the attacks. A friend said he had even
marked himself safe on Facebook after the two blasts at the Zaventem airport.
He went missing after a third bomb went off at Maelbeek Metro station on the Rue
de la Loi, close to the European Union (EU) headquarters.
Manjeev Singh Puri, the
Indian Ambassador to Belgium, Luxembourg and the EU, said: “What we dreaded the
most has unfortunately come true. Belgian authorities informed the Indian
embassy that Raghavendran Ganeshan was identified among the dead today. The
body will be transported back to India via Amsterdam later this evening. We
extend our sincerest condolences to his family.”
Infosys released a
statement which read: “It is with deep regret that we confirm the passing of
our colleague Raghavendran Ganesan in the terrible attack in Brussels. Our
thoughts and prayers are with Raghavendran's family and with those who were
injured or lost a loved one in these attacks. We will continue to provide all
possible support to his family in this hour of grief.”
Ganeshan had been
working in Brussels on a project for four years and got married a year ago. He
had visited India last month when his wife had a baby, who is now 40-day-old.
He returned to work in Brussels the week before the city was struck by the
terror attacks.
The total number of
dead in the Brussels terror attacks has crept up since last week, and currently
stands at 38.
