Kolkata: In lieu of the
upcoming Assembly elections, a new helpline has been launched by the
Bidhannagar city police to record their concerns and grievances over the
elections.
Residents can call up at
033-23357009 or 83369352001 to address their grievances. The three
Assembly constituencies under the commissionerate — Bidhannagar, Rajarhat-Gopalpur
and Rajarhat-New Town — will go to the polls next month on April 25. The
commissionerate plans to put up posters across all three constituencies
requesting residents to vote and urging them to call the helpline if they face
any trouble in the run-up to the elections as well as on the poll day.
Speaking about the
helpline, Bidhannagar police commissioner Jawed Shamim said: "We thought
of starting a helpline only for poll-related matters in order to reach the
maximum number of people. The emergency phone numbers will help voters alert us
when needed. By dialing these numbers, the voters can also get to know the
documents they need to carry to the booths.”
The move comes a day after the Election
Commission of India removed around 40 officers from poll duty in Bengal. Among
those who have been removed are one IAS and four IPS officers, who were serving
as district police chiefs. The election commission was "displeased"
after receiving repeated complaints of bias towards the state government and
subsequent inaction. Sources in the commissionerate said senior officers were
wary of coming under the scanner of the election commission.
Last year on October 3, Salt Lake and areas
in Rajarhat and Gopalpur witnessed large-scale violence in the Bidhannagar
Municipal Corporation elections. Thousands of outsiders had threatened voters,
beat up journalists and chased away cops in uniform on the poll day. Fifty
residents and 13 journalists were injured.
