Kolkata: The Left front
on Sunday unveiled a 16-page election manifesto for the West Bengal
Assembly elections and made promises that if elected to power, it will make
police and administration work in accordance with the tradition of a
multi-party democracy.
The manifesto promises
to restore freedom to express one’s opinion. Left Front chairman Biman Bose
said: "To achieve this, we have to defeat the Trinamool government.
Towards that end, we want the people to unite and form a democratic secular
government in the state."
The Left Front also
promised to put an end to the “political interference” in the administrative
works and remove the “corruption” which crippled it in last five years. The manifesto
also mentioned about the rise of communal forces in Bengal with the help of the
ruling Trinamool Congress. The party has called upon its workers to defeat the
Trinamool Congress in order to weaken the “communal forces like the BJP and
RSS” as it had helped the BJP to make its presence felt in the state.
The document also talks about safeguarding the rights of the civil
society. It stressed pursuing a secular policy and promised that the government
would not be partial to any religious community or interfere in religious
practices.
Regarding land
acquisition for industries, which had emerged as a contentious issue during the
last years of the Left Front government (2006-2011), the manifesto said it
would take "cautious steps" and sincere efforts would be initiated to
build up understanding between all stakeholders in the identified areas. It
further said that 20 percent of the annual budget will be allotted to
education.
The 2016 West Bengal
Assembly elections will take place from April 4 to May 5.
