New Delhi: In the first
semi-final match of 2016 ICC World T20, New Zealand defeated England by seven
wickets at the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium in New Delhi on Wednesday, to reach the
finals of the series.
Winning the toss,
England elected to field first. Colin Munro was New Zealand’s highest scorer
with 46 runs, failing four runs short from scoring a half-century. Kane
Williamson and Corey Anderson were the next highest scorers with 32 and 28 runs
respectively. English player Benjamin Stokes took three wickets for England. At
the end of 20 overs, New Zealand scored 152 runs off eight wickets. Williamson
and Martin Guptill became the second pair to add 1,000 runs in a partnership in
T20s.
In the second innings,
Jason Roy scored the second fastest 50 for an English player in a World T20
match (26 balls). He scored an impressive 78 runs off 44 balls, before being
bowled out by Inderbir Sodhi. Joseph Buttler scored 32 runs for his team. Sodhi
took a total of two wickets off 42 runs. After 17.1 overs, England scored 159
runs off three wickets to grab a spot in the finals. The loss was New Zealand’s
first loss since the ‘Super Ten’ stage in this edition of ICC World T20. Interestingly,
New Zealand’s solo loss came from a warm-up match against England this year
prior to the ‘Super Ten’ stage.
The second semi-final
match is going to take place on Thursday between West Indies and India, the
winner of which will face England in the finals.
It is the second time
that England made it to the finals of ICC World T20. The first time it made it
to the finals was way back in 2010, when it defeated Australia to win the
title.
