Mohali: In the eighth
‘Group Two’ match of the 2016 ICC World T20, Australia defeated Pakistan by 21
runs on Friday at the Punjab Cricket Association stadium in Mohali.
Winning the toss,
Australia elected to bat first. With 61 runs in his kitty, Steven Smith scored
the highest runs for Australia. Shane Watson fell six runs shorts at 44 to
score a half-century. Both the players remained not out. Imad Wasim and
Wahab Riaz took two wickets each for Pakistan after giving off 31 and 35 runs
respectively. Australia finished their innings 193 runs off four wickets.
In the second innings, Khalid
Latif and Shoaib Malik became Pakistan’s highest scorers with 46 and 40 runs
respectively. Malik remained not out till the end of the innings. All-rounder James
Faulkner took a record five-wicket haul to help Australia post a 21-run win over
Pakistan who scored 172 runs off eight wickets. Faulkner was adjudged ‘Player
Of The Match’.
The victory means
Australia remain in the hunt for a place in next week’s semi-finals with two wins
from three matches. Australia will now play in an effective knock-out tie
against India on March 27. The defeat saw Pakistan, the 2009 ICC World T20 winners,
making a humiliating early exit from the marquee T20 tournament.
The ‘Group Two’
leaderboard is topped by New Zealand with six points, followed by India and
Australia with four points each. Pakistan (two points) and Bangladesh (zero
points) have been eliminated from this edition of ICC World T20.
