Chennai: Playback singer P. Susheela Mohan has been recognized by both
the Guinness Book of World Records and Asia Book of Records for singing the most
number of songs in Indian languages. The singer met journalists in Chennai on
Tuesday to celebrate her new award.
While Guinness Book of Records has officially credited her for singing
17, 695 songs (solo, duet and chorus backed songs) in twelve Indian languages,
Asia Book of Records has recognized her for singing close to 17, 330 songs. A
group of ten people who have formed Pusheela.org
had sent her songs to the Guinness World Records and their efforts helped the Guinness
World Records to take notice of her.
The 80-year-old singer has sung songs in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam,
Kannada, Hindi and other Indian languages. Speaking about her career, she said
that it was “a big honor having sung so many thousands of songs” and recalled
how her debut began in Tamil film Petra
Thai in 1952 (a duet Etharkku
Azhaithai with A M Raja) and how film producer AV Meyappa Chettiar
supported her by identifying her talent during her early years. “I will sing
even now, if I get the opportunity,” she further added.
Susheela made her foray into tinsel town in 1950s, a time when top singers
like P. Leela, Jikki, M.L. Vasanthakumari were dominating the playback singing
scene.
The acclaimed singer has won many awards including National Awards and
honors of several State governments in her long singing career which includes
the Kalaimaamani Award of Tamil Nadu (1991) and Ragupathy Vangayya Award of
Andhra Pradesh (2004).
She ended the press conference by singing Ennai Pada Sonnal, Enna Paada Thondrum from Pudhiya Paravai, a hit song of
