Kolkata: On Wednesday, Bidhannagar police arrested a Howrah
resident after he allegedly impersonated as a CBI officer while approaching a
cop in connection with an alleged fraud.
The accused, who has been identified as Arnab Bhattacharya,
visited the office of Joy Tudu, the additional deputy commissioner of police,
airport zone, in New Town on Wednesday along with Sheikh Ibrahim, a resident of
Hyderabad. Bhattacharya had identified himself as a CBI officer attached to the
economic offences wing in the visitor's slip.
Tudu became suspicious when the visiting card given to him by
Bhattacharya did not mention any designation. While Tudu was talking to Ibrahim
and Bhattacharya in one room, other officers started tracking Bhattacharya's
antecedents. The police called the CBI offices in Nizam Palace and the CGO
Complex in Salt Lake and learnt that no one by the name of Arnab Bhattacharya
worked there. The cops also called the CBI headquarters in Delhi and got the
same response.
After verifying reports from everywhere, Tudu and other officers
started questioning Bhattacharya, which led to him breaking down and admitting
to forgery. Tudu said: “He had met a CBI officer several years ago and got his visiting
card. He designed his fake visiting card in the same format.”
According to police reports, Bhattacharya had approached Tudu with
the request that he can help Ibrahim recover Rs 8 lakh and several passports.
The police said Ibrahim met Bhattacharya in a car near Howrah station a few
days back. In order to introduce Ibrahim to Tudu, Bhattacharya had allegedly
taken money from him.
