Kolkata: The Election
Commission (EC) on Monday removed six additional IPS officers following
complaints from opposition parties, to take the total count to 44 state
government officials in poll-bound West Bengal, who have now been removed by
the EC.
The EC had earlier
shifted 38 officials including a District Magistrate, four SPs and an OSD in
Left Wing Extremism (LWE) area. The 38 officials included Hooghly DM Sanjay
Bansal, Burdwan SP Kunal Agarwal, Malda SP Prasun Bandyopadhyay, Nadia SP
Bhaskar Mukherjee, South Dinajpur SP Arnab Ghosh and OSD in LWE area Bharati
Ghosh. The transfer order came recently after the full bench of the EC, led by
Chief Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi visited the city and interacted with
political leaders when opposition parties had complained against these
officials.
Amidst reports of
pre-poll violence in some areas of West Bengal, the EC on Monday said that it
was keeping an eye on the situation. Additional Chief Electoral Officer
Dibyendu Sarkar said: “We are keeping watch on whatever is happening.”
In the first part of
the first phase of poll to be held on April 4, 39 candidates will be contesting
from six seats of West Midnapore district, 22 from three seats of Bankura and
72 from nine constituencies of Purulia.
Apart from the 1950
helpline allotted to the EC, each of the districts have been allotted a
helpline number where voters can lodge complaints related to
polling. Complaints can also be made with the help of mobile
app 'Samadhan'.
The 2016 West Bengal
legislative assembly elections will take place from April 4 to May 5, and will
take place in six phases.
