Los Angeles:
Indian-American contestant Sonika Vaid was eliminated from the fifteenth season
of American Idol on Thursday at fifth
place, thereby becoming the highest placed South Asian contestant in the show’s
history.
Sonika was saved by
judges Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick Jr. for the last two weeks
after she finished in ‘Bottom Three/Two’. On Thursday, she landed in the
‘Bottom Two’ again with Dalton Rapattoni, but this time, since
there weren’t any ‘Judge’s Save’ left, she was unable
to survive another week. Following her elimination, Sonika tweeted: “If you had
told me I'd be here last year, I wouldn't have believed you.”
Sonika
was supposed to perform Because The Night
and Loved Me Back To Life had she
made it to ‘Top Four’. She was referred constantly by the judges, mentors,
critics and fans as the contestant who has the best vocal this season. Her
performances like I Have Nothing, Since U
Been Gone, Bring Me To Life, Look At Me, Almost Is Never Enough, I Surrender
and One Last Time made her a force to
reckon with this season. But her inability to shine as a stage performer and
connect with the audiences led to her elimination, according to judges.
She
immigrated to the US from India along with her parents when she was a child.
She previously auditioned for The Voice in its fourth season. However, was not able turn a
chair.
Previously,
the highest placed South Asian contestants in American Idol history were Indian-American
contestants Anoop Desai, who finished in sixth place in season eight and
Sanjaya Malakar, who finished in seventh place in season six.
The
fifteenth season is the last season of the show and currently four people are
competing for being the last American
Idol — Mackenzie Bourg, Trent Harmon, Dalton Rapattoni and La’Porsha Renae.
