Kolkata: In their first
‘Super Ten’ match, reigning champion Sri Lanka defeated Afghanistan by six
wickets on Thursday at the Eden Gardens stadium in Kolkata.
Winning the toss, Afghanistan
chose to bat first to post 153-7, Sri Lanka romped won in just 18.5 overs
with Tillakaratne Dilshan as the top-scorer with an unbeaten 83. Dilshan struck
eight fours and three sixes off 56 balls to guide Sri Lanka to 155-4. Dilshan
was named ‘Player Of The Match’ for his performance.
Afghanistan team
captain Asghar Stanikzai was the highest scorer from his team with 62 runs. Sri
Lankan player Thisara Perera took three wickets, thereby becoming the highest
wicket-taker of the match.
Thursday’s win gave Sri
Lanka two points to be at the top of ‘Group One’, along with England.
Afghanistan and England both are now at bottom with zero points after losing
their respective matches, whereas South Africa is yet to play its first ‘Super
Ten’ match. Only two out of these five countries will make it to the
‘Knock-Out’ stage after every one of them has played one match with everyone in
the group.
Afghanistan is next
going to face South Africa on March 20, whereas Sri Lanka’s next match is with West
Indies on March 21. In the qualifying round, Afghanistan topped its group to
reach ‘Super Ten’ stage, ahead of Zimbabwe, Scotland and Hong Kong.
In ‘Group One’, South
Africa will play its first ‘Super Ten’ match with England today, whereas in
‘Group Two’, New Zealand will take on Australia today.
