Nagpur: In the fifth
‘Group A’ match of the 2016 ICC Women's World Twenty20, New Zealand defeated
reigning champion Australia by six wickets at the Vidarbha Cricket Association
stadium in Nagpur, thereby ensuring their entry to the semi-finals.
Electing to bat after
winning the toss, Australia Women could only score 103 off eight wickets.
Ellyse Perry was Australia’s highest scorer, scoring 40 runs for her
team. The next highest scorer for Australia was Jessica Jonassen with 23
runs. New Zealand player Leigh Kasperek emerged as the star of the day after
she took three wickets off 13 runs in four overs. She was adjudged ‘Player Of The
Match’. Kasperek was followed by Erin Bermingham, who took two wickets.
New Zealand Women
overwhelmed the small target with ease in 16.2 overs for the loss of just four
wickets. Rachel Priest was the country’s highest scorer with 34 runs, while
Suzannah Bates was the second highest scorer with 23 runs.
Monday’s win put New
Zealand at the top of the pack in ‘Group A’ with six points. Australia is now
tied with Sri Lanka for the second spot with two points each. South Africa and
Ireland are at the bottom of the pack and are yet to score a point.
Three-time champion
Australia is now going to take on Sri Lanka on March 24, while New Zealand is
next going to face South Africa on March 26. In ‘Group B’, India will take on
England today.
