Kolkata: As the nation
prepares to witness the biggest sporting event of the year as of now— the India
v/s Pakistan match of the 2016 ICC World T20— cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin explained
the intensity of the match by calling it a largely psychological battle and a
test of skilful handling of the key moments.
The Eden Gardens stadium in Kolkata will serve as the venue for
Saturday’s match. Cricket Association of Bengal President Sourav Ganguly
stepped on to the Eden turf during the Indians' practice on Friday afternoon to
check on the practice session.
Just four days into the World T20 and India are already playing
for survival. If India gets beaten by Pakistan on Saturday, they will be on the
brink of elimination.
Virat Kohli showed great camaraderie by presenting a bat to
Mohammed Amir after practice on Friday, but Ashwin knows all these will count
for little on Saturday. Ashwin claimed that there will be no generosity shown
in the field. He said: “This rivalry is huge, it's hard to say how huge it is.
It's probably bigger than the Ashes. As far the Indians and Pakistanis go, I
don't think they watch this as a game of cricket. It's more of a border
rivalry. They want to get one up on each other.”
Friday witnessed two group matches. In ‘Group A’, England defeated
South Africa by two wickets. They now stand with two points, while South Africa
has zero. In ‘Group Two’, New Zealand defeated Australia by eight runs. The win
made New Zealand the leaders of the group with four points, while Australia is
yet to score a point.
