Australian cricketer
Shane Watson has been picked by Royal Challengers Bangalore for a whopping INR 9.5crore
at the Indian Premier League (IPL) 9 auction, thereby becoming the most valued
player of the season. Watson thus became the first million dollar buy of the
auction with his package translating into US$ 1.39million.
Riding high on his
recent century in the last T20 series against India in Sydney, the
34-year-old former Rajasthan Royals captain had a base price INR 2crore. Watson
was joined by Yuvraj Singh (INR 7crore to Sunrisers Hyderabad) soon after even
though Saturday’s bid was far less than the INR 16crore that he had garnered in
the last auction. They were the big hits of the morning session which started
with the auctioning for the 12 marquee players. Also, walking away with a
package of INR 7crore was South Africa’s big-hitting all-rounder Chris Morris,
who was bought by Delhi Daredevils.
Although Watson was the
star of the event, but home boy Pawan Negi emerged as the breakout star as he
turned heads with a mind-boggling deal of INR 8.50crore to become the costliest
Indian buy. The 23-year-old cricketer was bought by Delhi Daredevils.
Mohit Sharma also made
headlines as he became one of the costliest players of the season too after
Kings XI Punjab bought him for INR 6.5crore.
On the other hand, Australia's T20 captain
and arguably one of the most prolific run-getters in the shortest format of the
game, Aaron Finch remained surprisingly unsold in the first round of bidding,
before being bought by the Gujarat Lions for his base price of INR 1crore in
the accelerated auction.
IPL 2016 or IPL 9 which will begin on April
8 and end on May 29, 2016, will see the eight teams competing against each
other for the big prize.
