The Congress and CPI(M) have formed an alliance today against the
Mamata Banerjee government and the Centre, by jointly hitting the streets in Calcutta,
Durgapur and Midnapore, signaling that the district party units have decided to
join hands without waiting for a clearance from the high command.
A number
of Left leaders and workers attended a demonstration organized by State
Congress president Adhir Chowdhury in Esplanade to protest the abduction of
Kandi municipality councilor Debojyoti Roy. The Left-backed Independent
councilor was abducted by suspected Trinamool workers in Murshidabad, days
ahead of a no-confidence motion where his absence ensured a win for the ruling
party." He was abducted so that Trinamool could form the board. Despite a
high court order, police did nothing to ensure Roy's presence at the voting. We
will fight this politically and legally," Chowdhury said.
In
Midnapore, the students' front of both the parties - the Student’s Federation
of India (SFI) and the ‘Chhatra Parishad’ - took out a rally against the
Centre. On Wednesday, the Congress and the Left workers will join a march in
Raidighi in South 24-Parganas; while in Durgapur, the CPI(M)'s labor arm Center
of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) and the Congress-backed Indian National Trade
Union Congress (INTUC) held a joint rally demanding reopening of closed
industrial units.
Meanwhile, the CPI(M) has given
a call to all democratic forces opposed to Trinamool and the BJP to unite, the
Congress high command is yet to take a decision on a tactical understanding
with the Left in Bengal.
