After
professor Ambikesh Mahapatra of Jadavpur University and Rohit Pashi from
Jalpaiguri stated their criticisms against the state ministry in social media,
precisely saying, in Facebook, it’s now turn for all the residents of the state
to check their social media activities. The West Bengal government has started
monitoring social media as an increasing number of people voice their opinion,
express their grievances or criticize those in authority via Facebook and
Twitter, a home department source said Tuesday.
CID and other
police agencies and the five police commissionerates are having a hawk eye to
the contents posted, shared and liked in Facebook by the users. A senior police
official said that users posting inflammatory and abusive contents come under
cyber crime. He also added "There is a difference between abuse and
criticism. People are free to criticize a political personality. But posting
abuses on social networking sites and making vulgar pictures of the state-heads
come under cyber crime offences. So we have chalked out parameters to determine
whether it is an abuse."
Explaining
the differences, the senior police officials said that if a person criticizes
the government or the rulers, it will not counted as an abuse; but posting
something morphed and unrefined will seriously get counted. CID Surajit
Purakayastha said that the police and the crime department are handling the
issue of cyber crime in a serious manner. He also requested all the
organizations to manage that properly too.
