Twenty-year-old
Indian-American contestant Sonika Vaid is now in the running to become American
Idol after making it to the top 14 contestants of the Season 15 of the TV
series.
Sonika, lives in
Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, USA, with her Indian parents, who both
immigrated to the United States. She survived two rounds of competition
on American Idol this week. The top 24 contestants were tasked to
perform twice — the first a solo number and the second a duet with a former
American Idol winner. Vaid sung Taylor Swift and The Civil Wars’s Safe & Sound for her solo, while for
her duet with Season 13 winner Caleb Johnson, she covered Adele’s Skyfall. Vaid impressed the celebrity
panel to snatch a place in the top 14 live shows, which will be held in the
next two weeks.
Her performance
prompted judge Keith Urban to say, “I was making some notes and then you
started singing, and I was like, ‘What the? What’s that sound?’ Your voice is
so good, Sonika, it just is.”
Her previous
performances were solo covers of Ariana Grande’s One Last Time and Celine Dion’s I Surrender, which landed her spot on Top 24.
Sonika now is going to
have to beat 13 other people to win the show’s last season. Since its premiere
in 2002, only two contestants of Indian origin have reached the live rounds of
the competition: Sanjaya Malakar, who finished seventh during Season 6, and
Anoop Desai, who was placed sixth during Season Eight.
