Chief Minister Nitish Kumar pass Proposal for Patna Metro

The Bihar government on Tuesday had passed a proposal for the Patna Metro Rail Project. The cost of this project is estimated to be around Rs. 16,960 crore. The proposed project targets to build the Patna metro by 2021 with 27 stations.

Earlier this month, on February 2nd, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had said in Gaziabad, Uttar Pradesh that Bihar government won’t allow metro rail projects in Patna. Kumar said that he is afraid that techniques evolved in the underground projects are prone to affect the historical value of the city and hamper some or the other memorials. Patna, formerly known as Patliputra, is a historical city in India with numerous historic monuments, shrines and testimonials.

Patna has a population of over two million and the number is increasing- as reports say. The state had made flyovers in the capital city to mitigate the increasing congestion and traffic sufferings of local; it is estimated that metro rail will only ease the situation as the proposed metro rail project will reportedly cover around 40 km distance in two routes under the Public Private Partnership  (PPP) Mode.

According to reports, disapproval of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had disappeared as he presided over the meeting and approved the metro rail project. The Rail India Technical and Economic Service (RITES) had submitted the Detailed Project Report (DPR) in 2014 to the Bihar Government, when the project estimate was reduced to Rs. 14,000 crores from Rs. 17,000 crores.
