Born on 18 July 1982 in Jamshedpur, Bihar, India, Priyanka
Chopra would 34 years later become one of the most iconic Indian actors at the
international arena. From being Miss World to a Filmfare and National award
winning actor to endorsing some of the biggest brands; from a Popstar to being
the first South Asian woman to headline an American TV series and at the same
time, making her presence be felt at international award ceremonies –this is
one woman who has done it all and quite in a badass way!
Growing up with her parents, both of whom
were physicians in the Indian Army, and a younger brother, Piggy Chops, as
she is called by her fans, lived in a number of cities, including Ambala,
Bareilly, Delhi, Chandigarh, Lucknow and Pune, which probably has allowed her to
mix with people of varied backgrounds, which speaks volume as to how she
connects with people across cultural barriers. At the age of 13, Chopra moved
to the United States to study. Facing racism in the country by a classmate, she
once said, "I was a gawky kid, had low self-esteem, came from a modest
middle-class background, had white marks on my legs ... But I was damn
hard working. Today, my legs sell 12 brands.” After three years, Chopra
returned to India, finishing the senior year in Bareilly.
Her mother then entered her in Miss India 2000, where she
placed 2nd and represented India at Miss World 2000, where at the age of 18,
she defeated 94 other delegates to bag the title and crown. Chopra, without
letting the success go to her head, started her career in Bollywood, and is now
one of the top most and highest paid celebrities of the country, dishing out
hits like ‘Aitraaz’, ‘Don’, ‘Fashion’, ‘Kaminey’, ‘Don 2’, ‘Agneepath’, ‘Mary
Kom’, ‘Bajirao Mastani’, among others. All these while, she remained a
powerhouse performer, as hailed by critics, winning 5 Filmfare awards and a
National award for her work.
But unlike most of her contemporaries, Chopra always comes
out on top for her out of the box, unconventional thinking and her hard work
and zeal. In 2012, she started her singing career on an international platform
by releasing ‘In My City’ featuring Will.I.Am, followed by ‘Exotic’ featuring
Pitbull, among other singles, and garnered favors for her skills without failing
to giving attention to her Bollywood career.
And then when you thought that you saw it all, she rose
further up by landing the lead role of ‘Alex Parrish’ in ABC’s 2015 TV series
‘Quantico’. Although she previously hosted the third season of ‘Fear Factor:
Khatron Ke Khiladi’, ‘Quantico’ was her first stint internationally. The show
not only received a thump-up from critics and fans alike, but also won Chopra
the 2016 People’s Choice Awards for "Favourite Actress In A New TV
Series".
What has actually
worked for Priyanka is the fact that she hasn’t forgotten her roots after
getting success in Hollywood. She continues to work at both the fronts. And it
shouldn’t be late when she makes her home country proud again.
With a huge follow up
and having more than 12 million Twitter followers, Piggy Chops is ruling the
world and for all the right reasons and her fans, just like her, will always
stay loyal to her.
