An elderly couple found strangulated in their Sodepur
residence yet again stresses on the lack of security for seniors in the state. The
bodies of Kalipada Das, 75, and Gita Das, 70, were found in two adjacent rooms
of their own house on Tuesday night. The house had been robbed house and the
goons had escaped after locking the main gate from outside.
According to neighbors, the couple kept to
themselves but had a nephew and a widowed daughter-in-law who stayed away but were
in regular contact with them. The bodies were discovered when their domestic
help came around 7.30 on Wednesday morning. Marzida Bibi, the help, rang the
doorbell but no one answered. The cook who arrived later noticed that the door was
locked from outside and alerted the neighbors.
The Das’s were reportedly strangulated. Neighbors peeked
through an open window and found Gita Devi lying on her bed. The residents informed
Ghola police station and the nephew Bankim of Kalipada Das. Police said to EXIN Times that, “Kalipada
was injured on the head with a blunt weapon before being strangulated. The
rooms had been ransacked, the almirah was open, and everything was scattered on
the floor.”
Cops suspect the couple were murdered when they
resisted the robbers but doubts rose since Gita Devi was found wearing two gold
bangles on her wrists. The widowed daughter-in-law Manjushri Das was informed
of the deaths. Barrackpore police commissioner, Niraj Kr Singh said, "A murder
case has been started but the motive has not been ascertained yet."
