The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has named
Parthiv Patel as the back-up for Indian captain MS Dhoni, who suffered a back
spasm injury during team’s training for Asia Cup 2016 in Dhaka on Monday.
BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur said: “India ODI and T20 captain
MS Dhoni has suffered a muscle spasm in the back during a training session
today in Dhaka.” "The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named
Parthiv Patel as the back-up wicketkeeper for the upcoming Asia Cup, 2016. He
will join the team in Dhaka at the earliest," he added.
The Asia Cup, which will be played in the T20 format this
year in the lead-up to the ICC World T20 in March, will feature Pakistan,
Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and United Arab Emirates (UAE) along with India.
Parthiv Patel last played for India in 2012, in an ODI
against Sri Lanka in Brisbane. He has played in only two T20s, one each against
England and West Indies, both in 2011. The 30-year-old keeper-batsman did enjoy
a successful domestic season with Gujarat, leading his team to the Vijay Hazare
Trophy title.
Following BCCI’s announcement, the board members received lot
of flak on social media, with many criticizing the poor choice of replacement
of the 34-year-old Indian captain. Most of them felt that Parthiv could never
take his place.
India's first match is against Bangladesh on Wednesday,
February 24, before the highly anticipated match with Pakistan on February 27.
