Gianfranco Rosi’s documentary film Fuocoammare (Fire At Sea),
dealing with the refugee crisis in the Mediterranean Sea off the Italian island
of Lampedusa, won the Golden Bear prize for Best Film at the Berlin
International Film Festival on Saturday.
According to EXIN Times, the film was heavily tipped to the
top of the Berlin awards after gathering appraisal from the audiences as well
as critics. According to reports, the island of Lampedusa has become quite a
metaphor because for the flight of refugees to Europe. Jury
president Meryl Streep said
“her panel was swept away by Fire At
Sea”. Gianfranco Rosi, in his acceptance, dedicated the prize to the
inhabitants of Lampedusa “who were always accepting to people arriving there.”
However it’s not the first time that he has won an
award for his documentary works. Another documentary by Rosi is Venice in 2013, where he showcased the
small island and its daily developments through a little boy named Samuele.
According to the winner director, he is still
overwhelmed with the reactions of Lampedusa Island. The director specially
mentioned in his award receiving speech that Lampedusa being a place for
islands they receive everything from the sea. “So we all need to learn to
receive everything from the sea,” he added.
