India emerged on top with a whopping 308 medals, the highest number won
by any country in the history of South Asian Games. The Games ended in Shillong
on Tuesday. Saturday’s final result also made the host country the winners for
the 12th consecutive time, thereby retaining India unbeatable since the
inception of South Asian Games in 1984.
India’s final medal tally of 308 medals included 188 gold, 99 silver and
30 bronze medals. This means that India has nearly doubled its score from the
last edition of the games in 2010, where India won 175 medals, including 90
gold medals.
The second spot in the medal tally went to Sri Lanka with 186 medals,
including 25 gold medals, which is less than seven times the number of gold
medals won by India. Sri Lanka was followed by Pakistan (106 medals),
Afghanistan (35 medals), Bangladesh (75 medals), Nepal (60 medals), Maldives (3
medals) and Bhutan (16 medals) at 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th position
respectively. The reason some countries are ranked higher than others despite
winning lesser number of total medals than them is because they won more gold
medals than the others.
On the final day, three Indian women boxers, M C Mary Kom (51kg), L
Sarita Devi (60kg) and Pooja Rani (75kg) brought glory to the country by winning gold
in their respective fields. In Judo, India won two gold medals and two silver
medals. India now has a total of 1,200 gold medals from the 12 South Asian Games
so far, the highest number of any of the three medals won by any country.
The 10-day-long event brought together 2,672 participants from eight
countries in Guwahati and Shillong, India. Tikhor was the official mascot for the
games.
The 13th edition will take place in Kathmandu, Nepal, in 2019.
