Eleven people were
injured in a clash between two factions of the student’s wing of the
ruling party of TMCP (Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad) at Asutosh
College on Tuesday.
Political supremacy is
being held as the reason behind the clash between the two student groups. According
to police reports, the feud started over the distribution of forms among second
year students. The argument between the two student union leaders eventually
led to the conflict. Along with assaulting each other, college properties were
vandalized too.
“The college has been
tense for the past few days, with the two groups repeatedly clashing. One of
the groups is led Sarthak Banerjee, chairman of the TMCP wing in Ashutosh
College and the other by Sanjay Dey, a post-holder in TMCP’s south Kolkata
wing,” said Rudraneel Banerjee, a student of the college.
The police reached the
campus at 3:30pm as the situation became alarming, but were not allowed to go
inside by the warring factions. A senior police officer said, “We eventually
had to resort to lathi-charge to enter the campus and control the
violence.”
The state president of
TMCP, Ashok Rudra, denied the involvement of his party in the incident. “No one
from the TMCP was involved in the matter of the violence that took place
between college students regarding distribution of forms. These (TMCP) students
were not in any way associated with the party,” he said.
The administration of
the college and principal Dipak Kumar Kar refused to comment over the incident.
