Jat Agitation Comes To an End, Government Agrees To Grant OBC Status to Jats

The Jat agitation will possibly come to an end with Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh announcing to introduce a Bill to provide OBC status to the Jat population in Haryana after a meeting with their leaders on Sunday morning. The agitation across Haryana had taken a violent turn and claimed 11 lives and injured 150. Apart from this, blockades due to agitation had hampered daily life and forced the police to implement Section 144 for upholding law and order, according to EXIN Times reports. 


According to reports, M. Venkaiah Naidu will examine the demand by the Jats for reservation in central government jobs. Anil Jain, the BJP general secretary in-charge of Haryana, said that the party’s government in the state will bring a Bill granting OBC status to Jats in the coming Assembly session. Singh asserted after the meeting that there will be a committee formation headed by senior cabinet minister Naidu for a comprehensive report to find a solution to the issue.



Later in the day, reports came in that blockades have been lifted at some important roads including — Saharanpur-Ambala at Yamunanagar, Paonta Sahib-Yamunanagar, Ambala-Kaithal, Saharanpur-Pipli-Kurukshetra, Zirakpur-Parwanoo and Ladwa-Shahbad. Apart from injuries and casualties, seven districts in the state have come under curfew. The business body ASSOCHAM estimated a loss of Rs 18,000 - Rs 20,000 crore and hopes to see developments soon.
