India is still riding
high at the 12th South Asian Games, which is taking place in Guwahati and
Shillong, with 198 medals in its kitty, including 118 gold medals.
Whether it is the
shooting, or the wushu or even the track and field events, India is excelling
in every field it is stepping its foot on to.
17-year-old Tejaswin Shankar,
an aspiring fast bowler, and won the silver medal in men’s high jump. “As I am the baby in the team, everyone is
taking good care of me. It has been wonderful to stay in the hotel of the
senior team and meet some of India’s star athletes. This is a big moment for me,”
the 6’4” tall Shankar said.
Neeraj Chopra (men's
javelin throw), Arokya Rajiv (men's 400m), Arjun (discus throw), J Surendhar
(men's 110m hurdles), Gayathry (women's 100m hurdles), Ankit Sharma (men's long

The final day of the swimming events also
showered medals for India. India won a total of 9 medals on the final day of
the swimming event, which included 5 gold medals, 3 silver medals and 1 bronze
medal. Veerdhawal Khade grabbed the first gold of the Games when he won the men's
50m butterfly event. Other gold winners for India were Shraddha Sudhir who won
the 200m medley for women, Jyotsna Pansare who won the 50m butterfly for women and
both the men's and women's 4x100 medley relay teams. Khade clinched the gold in
50m butterfly for men in a Games record of 24.54 seconds. The Indian men's
4x100m medley team also set a new Games record of 3:49.78 while winning the
gold. Sri Lanka was initially declared the winner of the women's 4x100m medley
relay event while India took the silver. But, as luck would have it, the Lankan
team was disqualified after one of their swimmers made a false start during the
change of legs, which resulted in bringing the gold for team India. Silver
winners for India were Sanu Debnath who won the 200m medley for men, Anshul
Kothari who won the 50m butterfly for men and Avantika Chavan who won the 50m
butterfly for women, while Shivani Kataria got a bronze in 100m freestyle for
women.
When it came to Wushu, India won eight gold,
one silver and two bronze medals on the final day of its event.
India is now 2 medals away from taking its
total medal tally to 200, which will a record as no country has ever achieved
that record in South Asian Games’ history.
