Siachen Survivor Lance Naik Hanamanthappa Breathed His Last This Morning


The 33 year old soldier from the 19th Battalion of Madras Regiment, Lance Naik Hanamanthappa Koppad passes away this morning at the Army’s Research & Referral hospital in New Delhi. The soldier of Indian Army, of the 19th Battalion of Madras Regiment was rescued alive on Monday after being buried under 35-feet under snow for six days after a ruinous avalanche had hit and buried their camp in Siachen on February 3rd.


The brave-heart was on a ventilator support after he got rescued and admitted in Army’s Research & Referral hospital on Tuesday due to multi-organ dysfunction. But his condition steadily deteriorated, as reports say. “Really sorry to inform everyone that LNk Hanamanthappa is no more. He breathed his last breath at 11:45 a.m. today,” Army officials said on Thursday.



Lance Naik Hanamanthappa, who is survived by his wife and two-year-old daughter, belonged to a farming family in Betadur village, Kundagol taluk, Dharwad district, Karnataka. Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted saying “He leaves us sad and devastated. RIP Lance Naik Hanamanthappa. The soldier in you remains immortal. Proud that martyrs like you served India”. Former chief minister of Karnataka, Jagadish Shettar visited Hanamanthappa’s family and consoled them for their loss. Meanwhile the bodies of nine other soldiers, which have been recovered from the avalanche site, are waiting to be airlifted from Siachen. Army officials said bad weather delayed their movement.
