Kolkata Municipal Corporation Announces To Launch App for Climate Change and Disaster Alerts

Kolkata Municipal Corporation announces to launch an app to support the citizens with a process to give them alerts for climate change and natural calamities. Supported by the United Kingdom under a two-year UK-Kolkata Municipal Corporation Programme of 1 million pound technical assistance on low-carbon-and-climate-resilient Kolkata, India’s first ever integrated climate cell at Kolkata Municipal Corporation therefore is under process to provide its citizens a feasible calculator coupled with various eco-friendly measures enabled to send weather and calamity alerts.


A release from KMC declared that the climate change cell consist a rooftop solar feasibility calculator, a first of its kind in the country. The initiative is expected to help people take steps at individual and collective levels to make a difference to the city. Asked about the soft launch of the weather alert app, West Bengal Pollution Control Board Chairman Kalyan Rudra said “Kolkata is among the worst hit polluted cities in the country with increasing level of contaminated particles in the air”. “We are the first city to launch this app. It will go a long way in creating awareness among people by letting them know the pollution levels and be alert”, he added describing the exclusivity.



After the launch, member and mayor-in-council of the KMC, Debashis Kumar said “Public transport is one of the major causes and we collect data from 19 places across the city regarding the pollution level and send the data to the transport department. There is a need to be stringent in terms of emission norms.”
