12 people lost their
lives on Sunday, 14th February, when a moving heavy vehicle ploughed into a Saraswati
Puja immersion procession that was taking place on the Grand Trunk Road between
Giridih and Bagodar in Jharkhand.
The accident occurred
when the driver lost control of the trailer-truck which hit people in the
procession, leading to untimely death of 12 people, the Deputy Commissioner of
Giridih, Uma Shankar Singh said. The police said that some died on the spot,
while the injured were rushed to hospitals. "Eight persons died on the
spot, two at Bagodar Hospital and one each at Dhanbad and Hazaribagh
hospitals," district Civil Surgeon S Sanyal said. The identity of the
driver has not been disclosed as of yet.
Jharkhand’s Chief
Minister Raghubar Das has expressed his condolence over the incident to the
affected people and has announced an ex gratia of Rs one lakh each to the kin
of the deceased. Although no amount can compensate the loss that the family of
the deceased is suffering, but this move might help, if not completely, the
financial need of the families. It also shows to an extent that the government
care.
Saraswati Puja took
place on Saturday, 13th February, and most of the major Pujas conducted the
immersion process on Sunday. Giridih is one of the 24 districts of Jharkhand,
and it the state’s 3rd most populous one. Bagodar is one of the community
development blocks in Giridih.
The joyous incident
wrecked the happiness of the people, who were enjoying the conclusion of the
festival.
