In another example of
history repeating itself, India won the Bi-lateral series against Sri Lanka on
Sunday, 14th February at Ranchi, India. In the 18 bilateral series that India
has played with Sri Lanka in India, India has won 14 times including Sunday’s
win and the two teams tied 4 times, which means Sri Lanka hasn’t been able to
win any.
Sunday’s match also
resulted in Sri Lanka achieving their lowest T20 score ever – 82 runs. Their
previous lowest total was 87 against Australia in Bridgetown in the 2010 World
T20. This is also the second-lowest total by any team against India in T20s;
the lowest is 80 by England in Colombo in the 2012 World T20.
Shikhar Dhawan hit a
six and a four off consecutively in the 14th over as India secured a
nine-wicket win with 37 deliveries to spare. This was their largest victory in
terms of wickets in hand and deliveries to spare, and the 2-1.
The star of the day was
undoubtedly 29 year old R. Ashwin, who picked up 4 wickets for 8 runs. With
that, he was named as the Man of the
Match and Man of the series. The batsmen of Sri Lanka could barely keep
up with the Indian bowlers and fielders, as only two Sri Lankan batsmen, Dasun
Shanaka and Thisara Perera scored in double digits.
Shikhar Dhawan remained unbeaten on 46 and Ajinkya Rahane was not out
on 22 at the end of the match. India lost only 1 wicket in Rohit Sharma.
The series win helped India retain their numero uno position.
