Los Angeles: Filmmaker
James Cameron is extending the world of Avatar
by adding a fourth sequel to his franchise plans.
Cameron said that there
will be four follow up movies rolling into theatres from 2018, all following up
on the action of the first Sci-Fi foray into Pandora. He scored a box office
hit in 2009 with the release of the original fantasy blockbuster, which starred
Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana. It currently holds the title as the
highest-grossing movie in history with a box-office collection of $2.78
billions, being the first film to cross $2 billions mark.
The 61-year-old Oscar
winning director said that while he first thought of making just two
follow-ups, there was just too much material that needed to be shared with
admirers of the mystical planet of Pandora and the Na’Vi tribe.
Cameron said: “I’ve been working with the top four screenwriters
and designers in the world to design the world of Avatar going forward. The
environments, new cultures... from what I'm seeing, the art on the wall... in
pure imagination is just beyond the first film.” “We have decided to embark on a truly massive
cinematic project, making four epic films, each of which stands alone but
together forms a complete saga,” he added.
The first sequel is slated to appear in 2018, with the remaining
films rolling out in 2020, 2022 and 2023.
Avatar, which released in 2009, won a number of accolades,
including three Academy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, two BAFTAs, among
others.
