Mohali: In the
twenty-first League match of the 2016 Indian Premier League (IPL), reigning
champion Mumbai Indians defeated Kings XI Punjab by 25 runs at the Punjab
Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium on Monday.
Kings XI Punjab won the
toss and elected to field first. In the first innings, Parthiv Patel was Mumbai
Indians’ highest scorer with 81 runs. He was followed by Ambati Rayudu (65
runs), Jos Buttler (24 runs) and Kieron Pollard (10 rums). Mohit Sharma was
Kings XI Punjab’s best bowler of the night, as he took three wickets off 38
runs from four overs. Sandeep Sharma, Axar Patel and Mithcell Johnson also took
one wicket from four overs each by giving 20, 41 and 43 runs respectively. At
the end of the innings, Mumbai Indians scored 189 runs off six wickets.
In the second innings,
Glenn Maxwell scored 56 runs for Mumbai Indians, thereby becoming its highest
scorer. He was followed by Shaun Marsh (45 runs), David Miller (30 runs) and
Murali Vijay (19 runs). Miller remained not out. Jasprit Bumrah took three wickets
for Kings XI Punjab off 26 runs from four overs, while Tim Southee and Mitchell
McClenaghan took two wickets from four overs each by giving 28 and 32 runs
respectively. At the end of 20 overs, Kings XI Punjab scored 164 runs off seven
wickets.
Patel was named ‘Player
of The Match’.
Mumbai Indians now
stands at six points, while Kings XI Punjab stands at two points.
Mumbai Indians will now
take on Kolkata Knight Riders on April 28 in Mumbai, while Kings XI Punjab will
take on Gujarat Lions on May 1 in Rajkot.
